Engineer. VFX vet. Citizen scientist. Roaming North America with the @DirtyNerdyNomads — join the Video Rangers for the tools, the honest failures, and a real look at #vanlife

Greetings! I’m Scott Kirvan -- aka Captain Video!

I am a Systems Architect and 27-year tech/VFX veteran. I co-authored the ray-tracing renderer whose algorithms run inside the silicon behind billions of devices worldwide, founded a brewery in the Pacific Northwest, and worked as an On-Set VFX Supervisor for projects like Jeepers Creepers, South Park, Apple's For All Mankind, and I'm a Virgo — the latter earning a VES Award nomination.

Today, my partner and I are taking a different route. We are traveling North America off-grid in our mobile command center—a converted Freightliner Sprinter named Gomtuu—with our Alaskan Malamute, Havok.

The Mission
We're engineering an alternative approach to life. This is something we've wanted to do for a long time — and we're finally taking the risk to make it real: off-grid, on the road, building our own way as digital nomads. Along with contract work and various other personal projects, I am actively developing a bespoke AI-integrated Operating System for Gomtuu—a system designed to operate as both a deep-level diagnostics engineer and a local guide for our travels.

What I Build & Share
I am a deep systems thinker, tools engineer, and CI/DevOps nerd. I use GitHub to share the results of my R&D, focusing heavily on:

  • Unreal Engine: virtual production, tools development, pipelines, and tech-art.
  • Systems Architecture: Hardware/software and AI integration for mobile, off-grid infrastructure.
  • Knowledge Management: Heavy markdown workflows, Obsidian PKM, and complex system design docs.
  • The "Hairy Problems": Gists and code snippets for the frustrating, undocumented technical roadblocks that take too much time to solve.

Join the Video Rangers Today
We believe in open education and helping other artists and engineers unblock their pipelines. Your sponsorship directly funds the R&D and delivery of our various projects, keeps Havok in dog treats, and allows us to dedicate our time to working on and sharing high-level architectural solutions and tools with the community.

Whether you are here for the code snippets or looking for 1-on-1 technical consulting, check out my Sponsor tiers and consider joining the Video Rangers.

Welcome to the frontier.

@ScottKirvan

$200/month is roughly what it costs to keep Gomtuu's Starlink and compute stack running — the actual infrastructure this R&D depends on. Hit that, and the tools and field reports I publish are funded by the people using them, not squeezed out of client-work margins.
