🎨 Added newsletter subscribers to the analytics overview for free sites - #32562
I run a free newsletter on Ghost. I don’t sell memberships and don’t plan to; everything goes out through a single free newsletter. I only connected Stripe to accept donations. The number I care about is how many people get that email.
The overview doesn’t show it. Because Stripe is connected, Ghost treats my site as having paid members, so one of the three cards is MRR, which is always $0. Next to it is members, which isn’t the same as subscribers: plenty of readers unsubscribe from the newsletter but keep their account, because it isn’t obvious to them that that’s how it works—and the Member count, for me, drifts from the Newsletter count all the time. My site has 206 members but only 158 subscribers. To see the real number, I have to open the Newsletters tab every time.
Before and after
Same site: Stripe connected for donations only, one active newsletter, 206 members, 163 subscribers.
Before:
After:
What
On sites without MRR that send exactly one newsletter, the overview now shows a “Newsletter subscribers” card: the current count, its trend over the selected range, and “View more” through to the Newsletters tab.
Without Stripe, the card is added next to Members.
With Stripe but no MRR (for example, connected only for donations), it replaces the flat $0 MRR card.
With MRR, nothing changes, and the newsletters list isn’t requested.
With several newsletters, nothing changes, as there’s no single subscriber number to show.
The logic lives in a new useSoleNewsletterSubscribers hook.
Test
Acceptance tests in analytics.acceptance.test.tsx cover four cases:
Stripe connected only for donations, no MRR, one newsletter: the subscribers card replaces MRR, requests stats for that newsletter, and links to the Newsletters tab.
No Stripe, one newsletter: the subscribers card sits next to Members.
Two newsletters: the MRR card stays.
A site with MRR: the MRR card stays and the newsletters list isn’t requested.
I also checked it on a local site seeded to match mine; that’s where the screenshots come from.

Publishers who don’t connect Stripe and send one free newsletter care about
how many people receive it. The overview showed members, which still counts
people who unsubscribed but kept their account, plus a flat $0 MRR line when
Stripe was connected, while the subscriber count sat on the Newsletters tab.
When a site has no revenue and exactly one active newsletter, the overview
now shows that newsletter’s subscribers, in MRR’s place when Stripe is
connected. With revenue or several newsletters, nothing changes.
The analytics overview now shows a newsletter subscriber KPI when subscriber data is available. It loads subscriber data after growth stats finish loading when the revenue condition is not met, and only returns subscriber data when exactly one active newsletter exists. The KPI includes a subscriber total, trend, chart, and navigation to newsletter analytics. When subscriber data is shown, the MRR card is hidden. Acceptance tests cover revenue, newsletter count, settings, request filtering, and navigation.

Subscriber loading can delay ready dashboard metrics, and newsletter-list failures silently restore the MRR card. These are limited dashboard issues; merging carries low risk with owner awareness and follow-up.

The pull-request diff adds one new file, apps/admin/src/analytics/hooks/use-sole-newsletter-subscribers.ts. All other changed files already existed, and no added .js, .jsx, .cjs, or .mjs source file appears.
Full details: Tooling Ownership
Explanation
PASS. The PR changes only Admin analytics runtime code, Admin acceptance tests and screen locators, Admin test fixtures, and shared analytics test selectors. The changed-file inventory contains no scripts, tools, build helpers, or shared configuration paths. The new hook belongs beside the Admin analytics code, and the acceptance support changes remain beside their Admin test owner.
Full details: Type-Safe Boundaries
Explanation
The concern remains unresolved. The new useSoleNewsletterSubscribers hook consumes the subscriber-count HTTP response at apps/admin/src/analytics/hooks/use-sole-newsletter-subscribers.ts:54-80 and dereferences stats, total, and values. Its call path uses useSubscriberCountWithRange, which calls useSubscriberCount without a response parser. apps/admin-x-framework/src/api/stats.ts:309-315 still passes no parseResponse, and createQuery returns the raw fetch result when no parser exists at apps/admin-x-framework/src/utils/api/hooks.ts:68-80. The response shape remains a handwritten TypeScript type at stats.ts:149-161. The PR adds this new consumer but does not add runtime validation.
Resolution
Add Zod schemas for NewsletterSubscriberValue, NewsletterSubscriberStats, and NewsletterSubscriberStatsResponseType, derive the TypeScript types with z.infer, and configure useSubscriberCount with parseResponse: (data) => NewsletterSubscriberStatsResponseSchema.parse(data). Keep useSoleNewsletterSubscribers dependent on the parsed response.

Connecting Stripe only to take donations makes Ghost count a site as having
paid members, so the overview shows a $0 MRR card. Named that case in the
tests and added the one without Stripe, where the subscribers card sits
next to members instead of replacing MRR.
The acceptance tests seed subscriber history from 150 to 158 but assert only the total of 158. They do not check the trend direction, the percentage change, or the "from" value. A change that reports a flat or reversed trend would still pass the suite.
Add a hook-level test for useSoleNewsletterSubscribers with the same seeded values. Assert that diffDirection indicates an increase, diffValue equals the formatted percentage of the 150-to-158 change, and trendingFromValue is 150. If the trend text is visible without interaction, the acceptance test can assert it instead.

Extend the analytics acceptance coverage for the newsletter subscriber history
seeded through fakeAdminStats to verify the trend, not just the total: assert an

existing trend formatting, and trendingFromValue of 150. If the trend text is

Assert the exact newsletters route in the navigation check.
The check at line 321 accepts any /analytics/newsletters/ route. currentRoute returns the full hash, including the query string. A card that sends ?tab=<other> would still pass, and a route without the query would also pass. The View more button calls the card's onClick, which navigates to /analytics/newsletters/?tab=total-subscribers. The linkto prop is not read by the card.
Use an exact match so the test checks the tab the card selects. This matches the exact toBe route check already used in this suite.

error, then use that error in the hasRevenue logic so a failed MRR request on a
paid site keeps the MRR card visible instead of treating the missing data as
zero revenue.
- Line 271: Update the OverviewKPIs loading flow so isSubscribersLoading does
not hide the visitors, members, and MRR cards; keep the row’s loading state tied
to visitor and growth-stat loading, and give the subscriber card its own loading
state. Reserve the subscriber card’s slot while it loads so showSubscribers does
not cause the MRR card to shift position when subscriber data arrives.

- A failed MRR request no longer reads as zero revenue, so it can’t swap the MRR card for newsletter subscribers on a paid site
- A failed subscriber history keeps the count but drops the trend, instead of showing a flat 0%
- Tests now check the subscriber trend and the exact “View more” route

Show a distinct state when the newsletter list request fails.
When useBrowseNewsletters fails, soleNewsletter stays null and the hook returns subscribers: null. On a Stripe-connected site with no MRR, the overview then shows the $0 MRR card instead of the subscribers card. Destructure isError from the browse query and handle it, as the stats error path already does.

Show an unavailable value instead of $0 when the MRR history request fails.
On a paid-enabled site, a failed MRR history request sets hasRevenue to true. The subscriber lookup is skipped, and the MRR card renders growthTotals.mrr. That value is 0 because the MRR data is empty. The card shows $0 with no error or unavailable state.
Pass isMrrError into OverviewKPIs. While it is set, render an unavailable value in the MRR card instead of the formatted $0. Keep the MRR card rendered in that state, so the subscriber lookup remains skipped.
As per coding guidelines, "Network failures: retry when it is safe, then show the generic fallback if the request still cannot complete."
