Casey Newton shared thisWho wants to join our team in San Francisco?Casey Newton shared thisExciting news! I’ve left the Times to launch a new independent podcast with my favs, Kevin Roose and Casey Newton, and we’re now looking for the right person to join our team! The show is going to be a lot like our beloved Hard Fork: smart, irreverent analysis of the most important developments in tech, especially A.I. We’re looking for an experienced, SF-based video producer who can work alongside me in pitching, prepping and cutting full-length episodes of our show on tight deadlines. Our ideal candidate has covered tech, worked on chat show podcasts or other popular YouTube content, and is a whip-fast video editor in Premiere. Bonus points for After Effects expertise and experience shooting in the studio and the field. If you think you’re the right fit or know someone who is, please DM me!

I'm ecstatic for this new challenge, which will give me the chance to dig into difficult stories on a wide range of topics, and put me at the center of the newspaper's mission to hold the world's most powerful people and organizations accountable. It's been a difficult year, with this newsroom enduring mass layoffs and an exodus of top talent -- including many of my closest friends. But I still believe deeply in the work we are doing to help readers seek out the truth and I find inspiration every day from the incredibly talented people that remain at The Post. Please keep reading and subscribing. And if you encounter wrongdoing or abuse, I’d love to hear from you: Signal @douglasmac.02. https://lnkd.in/epSD28FEMacMillan joining Washington Post’s rapid response investigations teamMacMillan joining Washington Post’s rapid response investigations team

Casey Newton liked thisCasey Newton liked thisToday is MSFT earnings day. Each quarter for the past 54, I've worn one of two shirts -- what I call my "earnings shirts." I used to post photos of these to Twitter; at one point our hyper paranoid compliance team wondered if I was sending some sort of signal about what to expect by picking one shirt over another. These shirts fell into my closet a bit by accident. When Peter Klein became CFO years ago, he expressed an interest prior to his first earnings in doing more broadcast. So we went out and got him two very nice dress shirts in broadcast blue – one normal cuff, one french cuff. He did one set of broadcast, didn’t like it, and the shirts hung in his office for several years. When Amy Hood took over and moved into the office, she quite naturally enquired about the shirts. They did not fit her. But, the company had paid for them, so it felt like a bit of a waste to give them away, I volunteered to take them, paid (my own money) to have them altered, and so started a tradition -- earnings day = earnings shirt. I've worn them on good earnings, complicated earnings, when we did earnings (why) from Las Vegas in the heat. They've started to fade a bit, the elbows are sort of shiny, i can tell that on the french cuffs they are starting to wear on the crease and will soon start to fray. I wore the french cuffs today, paired with cufflinks I bought at an auction in North Carolina while on active duty with the Marines, there were two big cans of old cuffs for sale and I bid on and got both of them, some made the cut and are worn, others became things kids play with when they come and visit the house, or in one case were turned into imaginary control buttons on a box for my son. Today is my last earnings. I like the shirts. Freed of the constraints of once per quarter, I'll commit to wearing them more often, I am confident that the amortization of the original purchase, plus expected depreciation means I can do so without running afoul of compliance, expense reporting violations or regulatory challenges.

Casey Newton liked thisCasey Newton liked thisKevin Roose and Casey Newton's new podcast with NPR, Machine Gods, is just what AI news and reporting needed. Love the deep discussions and humor. I highly recommend the most recent episode, Inside Anthropic’s IPO + How AI agents spy on your messages. In particular, their segment discussing communications privacy in the age of agentic AI with Meredith Whittaker, president of The Signal Foundation, includes some of the most intelligent discussions I've heard on AI ethics and privacy. Follow this show and follow her; she really gets it and isn't afraid to say the things we need to hear. #aiethics #artificialintelligence #ai #machinegods https://lnkd.in/eAYmzgtUInside Anthropic’s IPO + How AI agents spy on your messages : Machine GodsInside Anthropic’s IPO + How AI agents spy on your messages : Machine Gods

The television media architecture provides the public with two types of frames: episodic and thematic. The episodic news framing will treat political issues/events as specific, isolated and individual events. Iyengar argues that television news relies overwhelmingly on episodic framing, focusing on individual cases, individual victims and individuals responsible for it. Using such episodic framing, the television media leads the audience to blame individual choices or flaws rather than focus on systematic, governmental or structural failures.

Sorry, you techies dreaming of a new career in park ranger-ing. Those jobs got DOGE'd. On this week's episode of Pacific Standard Time, we spoke with Rya Jetha about the doomsday dinner conversations workers in Silicon Valley are having as AI takes over their job responsibilities.

For my last freelance story, I wrote about how software engineers are fighting AI code slop. Among other approaches, engineers are scrutinizing plans before AI begins coding, deploying specialized AI agents to catch routine flaws, sending risky changes to human reviewers, or requiring developers to defend the code their agents produce. The increased focus on code review has implications for early-career engineers -- and the profession as a whole. Read more in IEEE Spectrum: https://lnkd.in/gvVEnZDv

As large language models begin to hallucinate less, we're starting to trust them more. That's a mistake. "When you hear that the iceberg is mostly under the water, you don't feel better," Dan Klein a University of California, Berkeley professor and co-founder and CTO of Scaled Cognition told me. Last June I also wrote about how chatbots were still making stuff up and since then we keep hearing about people believing, sharing and publishing chatbot hallucinations. Here's my annual reminder not to be lulled into believing everything your seemingly smart AI friend tells you. (Also, not your friend.) https://lnkd.in/g4sv9t3x

Not enough marketing and communications pros are paying attention to what is already this generation's big platform shift of information: What is the source of all those AI results? This story (link in comment) from Pete Pachal sums it up nicely: "Comms teams now often put a number on which reporters shape what a chatbot says about their clients, and that has quietly made PR a more strategic job than it was two years ago. A pitch becomes an article, the article gets cited in an AI answer, and you have about as clean a line from cause to effect as the influence business ever produces. Courting influence is nothing new, of course, but there’s often a big difference in what AI counts as influential vs. the old ways, at least for particular brands. Muck Rack compared the journalists PR teams pitch most against the ones AI actually cites most, and the overlap was just 2%. That chasm is there because AI answers reward topical authority over general authority." This is rapidly becoming a primary strategy for Technical.ly, which maintains editorial independence exactly so we can disproportionately shape AI results for the ecosystems we report on. Place-based economic developers underwrite *where* we report, not *what*, which ensures there is consistent, high-quality coverage of their local economies. This is moving so fast, now is the time to set the narrative your organization, or community, is proudest of.

NEW, from me and Paresh Dave: Meta experienced a security breach that internally exposed employee data, which was being collected as part of a controversial program to log employee activity on their computers and use that data to train Meta’s AI. Shortly after we wrote this story, we confirmed that Meta has in fact now paused its MCI program.
